Choose Your Hopes for the World
List 3 or 4 things that
you would wish for the world in 2042 in a world with significantly less use of
energy and fossil fuel, a world that has adapted to climate change and one that
has moved beyond economic growth. Be optimistic and do not be constrained by
what you expect or fear might happen. When you have finished, you can share
with 2-3 others.

Exercising the Imagination-An Image From Your Past
Choose a memory from your
recent or long ago past. This is a good image that you will re-experience. You
will remember it in details. Describe in detail the setting: people, sights,
smells, sounds, your feelings. Stay as long as you can in this memory. Jot down
here what you see. You can also make a picture of what you see.
Moving Into the
Future
What do you see in the world
of 2042? You are an observer. Look for concrete details. Ask questions of those
you meet for clarification. What do you see in these areas, or others?
Education,
governance, family life, cultural habits (eating, socializing, entertainment,
leisure and recreation), governance, neighborhoods and communities, buildings,
work and volunteerism, where do people live?, what do human relationships look
like? Relationships with other life? How do people find joy? Spirituality? What
do people need? How do they suffer? How are conflicts handled? Do you see
evidence of your goals of 2012 being played out?
Do not raise
questions of practicality. You are observing only. Write down and then or draw
what you see:

Futures-History
Let’s figure out how we got to where we are in 2042
Jot here notes of your remembrances of how we got here. You
will remember specific milestones and events, not in generalities. Examples: breakthroughs
in cultural, historical, geopolitical, policies, technological, spiritual. Don’t
worry now about when these things happened. Just remember.
Still in 2042, now
put your events in a timeline, working systematically backwards from the
present. We have put 5 year intervals for convenience but you may use whatever
format works best for you.

2. What is your goal within this action setting?
3. With whom do you
need to develop “right relationships” (term used by the National Peace Academy
in its core mission, taken from the Earth Charter[ii])
within your action setting? Who are you allies? You may find you have allies in
several of the spheres.
4. List several objectives you will hope to
accomplish within the following timeframe to reach your goal:
Next week
Next month
At the end of this
year
What are some
challenges you believe you might face as you move forward with your plan?
Finally, do you have resources
to share? On the following pages are some resources you may find helpful:
